How Many Skeins of Floss Will I Need?

How Many Skeins of Floss Will I Need?

How many stitches per yard of embroidery thread?  Great question!  Here's a simple chart I've compiled by counting my own stitches and estimating.  The count of fabric you use, whether you're stitching with one strand of floss or two, and how you go from stitch to stitch will result in more or less floss useage.

How many stitches in a skein of embroidery

Why list "per yard"?  Different companies provide different yardage!  A basic skein of DMC has 8.7 yards of floss, whereas overdyed threads like Classic Colorworks and Weeks Dye Works provide 5 yards.  So doing a little math will give you the final answer of how many skeins you need.

Example:  I am stitching on 32 count linen using two strands off loss.  I have 2000 stitches to make of one color.  I divide 2000 by 250 and get 8, meaning I'll need 8 yards of floss.  One skein of DMC should be enough, or two 5 yard skeins of something like Classic Colorworks.
